Truly Believe

I came across a quote not too long ago that really struck me and has continued to linger in my mind.

“Do you really believe that
what you believe is really true.”

This quote has taken me down a long road of contemplation and examination. How much of God’s Word do I really believe? Of course as with most proclaimed Christians I have always stated with certainty that I believe everything in the Word of God. However, I have come to understand that ‘true believing’ is not just a function of the human intellect or mind. ‘True believing’ is faith and faith rests in the soul of man as much as it does in the mind of man.

For instance all of us truly believe in the law of gravity. If we only believed in our minds that the law of gravity existed we would be tempted in very many ways to live our lives ignoring that law when it inconvenienced us. Rather than taking the flight of stairs from our 3rd floor office we might just jump out the window, or when there was no seat and are legs were weary we might just set down in the air. We don’t do any of these things though because we are absolutely convinced and have complete faith that the law of gravity is trustworthy and true. And so we know that if we jumped out a 3rd story window it could spell disaster or if we sat down in thin air that we will end up picking ourselves up off the ground.

Do I—Do we ‘truly believe’ God’s Word. Do I have such faith in God’s Word,in its trustworthiness and truth that it affects the way I live? Am I convinced—Are you convinced that what God says is truth and that it is better off for you if you heed such truth?

I tend to believe that there are parts of God’s Word that we don’t believe like we think we do. For if we truly believed them then our lives would show it. I have been trying as I read God’s Word to ask myself if I ‘truly believe’ what God is saying— am I so convinced of it that it is impacting how I live?

True faith impacts your life and your thinking. If you really believe that what you believe is true then it will impact your life. I wrestle everyday with how my faith should impact my life in American Suburbia.

There are areas in which we are all learning to trust God—to take Him at His word. However, this cannot be our excuse for the majority of what we believe or else we are only skin deep Christians who have a religion but little more. It is a good thing for all of us to ask ourselves….

“Do you really believe that
what you believe is really true.”
